New here and new to snakes

    Hello everyone

I have never owned a snake before so this is all new to me. I'm looking to get a Kenyan sand boa. I have heard that they are a good beginner snake and now I'm trying to learn as much as I can about them before I get one. I know that I want to get one from a reptile show instead of having it mailed to me. Luckily there are two shows coming up. There's the National Breeders Expo next month and the month after is the F.I.R.Expo.

So far this is what I have planned to buy.

A tub to put it in. Still thinking about what size to buy. I'm thinking about getting a male and someone said that I would need a 15 gallon tub.

    Shredded Aspen for the bedding.

An under tank heater. Trying to figure out the best one to get that is safe for plastic tubs. I heard Flukers was a good brand to get. What uth do you all use?

    A small water dish.

That's what I have so far on my check list. Please reply if you have anything else. I know I'll have more questions, lol

Most of my kids are cold blooded

Idk anything about kenyan sand boas but i do know you will need a good thermostat to regulate your uth and a goid digital yhermometer/hygrometer. The dial ones are very inaccurate.

Re: New here and new to snakes

I have an extra digital thermometer that I used for my beardies and it tells me what the humidity is in the tank. But I don't have a thermostat yet. Any good brands or types that you recommend?

Here is some equipment that you will find useful:
Thermostat for the UTH (this is so the snake will not get burned)
    Digital Thermometer
    Digital Hygrometer
    Temp Gun

There may be other important equipment, but i would make getting a thermostat a top priority

I would go with either a herpstat or a Vivarium Electronics (reptile basics sells them). Making a good investment on a thermostat is a good idea. I've had cheap ones that have failed in the past, so I just go with the best I can get my hands on.

I think your shopping list looks pretty good! Sand boas are really cool! I'd like to get one..One of these days!! lol
