That's what I go by. If I see dark red or purple it's a male. I don't really like to pop the entire hemipene out. Once you do it a lot you'll be able to tell a lot better. If you pop and see dark red/purple you're going to see the same thing when you pop the whole thing out, just bigger. Hatchlings are much easier to practice with and I have popped them all the way out just to be sure my theory is right.
