how should a male look popped?

i have a year old pinstripe. i tried popping it when i got him a year ago. it looked like a female but just redder. so i bought a probe set and probed him. that worked pretty well. his tail feels like it is weaker than the other snakes i have. is there any probability that i could have damaged his organs while probing and popping?

Yes...probing a snake when you don't know what you're doing can cause problems...

It sure can. Your best bet is to get someone with experience show you how. And buy a nice ball tipped probe set to reduce risk of damage...

even if the hemipenes dont pop out you will see red dots on each side and on females you won't see those red dots. well thats my experience when ive popped my own snakes

There should be two little nubs that may be flesh-colored or pink. Those are the scent glands, and both sexes have them. Males will have two additional red or purple dots when you pop, even if you don't evert the hemipenes completely.

That's what I go by. If I see dark red or purple it's a male. I don't really like to pop the entire hemipene out. Once you do it a lot you'll be able to tell a lot better. If you pop and see dark red/purple you're going to see the same thing when you pop the whole thing out, just bigger. Hatchlings are much easier to practice with and I have popped them all the way out just to be sure my theory is right.
