Speeches
In ten minutes time, I'll be giving a speech to 21 people about anti reptile legislation; specifically the reptile ban and the Ohio, Virginia, and recently Arizona bills.
Im really nervous, but I feel like I'm really confident in that I know my stuff!
How are you guys about giving speeches?

I hate public speaking.. shaky, light headed, all that... but have no issue with impromptu small gatherings of strangers when the time is right. I love talking about my animals, I just hate organized structured public speaking

I was nervous at first, but once I got going and showed off the gang in my power point I felt really good about it. I had note cards and a back up paper to help, but ended up using neither! I was pretty proud of myself. I knew it all anyway, but it was great to be able to just let it flow out like a conversation.
If I don't get an A, I'll be surprised haha!

As a shy kid who couldn't even walk up to ask for napkins at a fast food joint, you'd think I'd hate talking in front of crowds. Truth is, nowadays I love it. That button switched after I started working customer service. I hated how I was treated by people in the service industry, so when I got into it, I decided to be the kind of person that actually cared and made someone feel special. When I started doing that, I realized people really respond to it. I worked at Dairy Queen for 5 years, and if I was working my till, I'd end up with my own line. I'd have people say: "No thanks. I want Danielle to help me." And I made sure to remember people's favorites, and communicated to make the experience of waiting for food not so bad.
Since then, I associated talking to strangers with giving them a positive experience. Someone giving me a 'look' or 'negative feedback' doesn't hurt, because I control how much affects me. Heck, I've had a gun pulled on me before for an attempted robbery and managed to talk to guy down to having a milkshake instead (long story, he was high...). So there's nothing really scary about it. You just have to walk up there and own it. Stand there like this is your moment. Don't worry about the clock, the way people look at you. Just talk. Give them a moment to remember. If they were your customer, what are you trying to sell them? Treat them like you'd want to be treated. Don't talk at them, treat it like a conversation
And, as crazy as it sounds, have fun, be loose and calm and not afraid if you goof up.
Own it

I used to be exactly the same way as a child. My first and previous job I worked at a convenience store. After two months I was a supervisor, and it was an impediment I couldn't have in the way anymore. I still get nervous and shaky some. But I've been in retail for about 3 years now, and I can't believe I was that way before looking at how I am now.
But, that's exactly what I did. Got up there, made it clear that I knew what I was talking about and treated all of them just like any of you guys: a fellow herper! Like I was shooting the breeze with like minded people on a mutually important topic.

Thinking on it, I have had a much better time of talking in front of groups since being in retail for 5 years. I guess where my public fear stems specifically, is publicly speaking about something I don't consider myself 'extremely knowledgeable' on... so while I would have no problem talking about my animals in front of a huge crowd of strangers, I don't like being in school talking about some topic I never cared much about to begin with, and now I get to look silly trying to talk about it
Glad everything went well for you Kodieh!! Let us know the results once you get them

I definitely will!
We did a group speech last week over Moonshine. It's something I knew a lot about and I became the appointed leader of our group.
On the grading for the group we got a 76/100 because of my other group members.
I know this because the teacher specifically said "your part was the best!" haha. For the individual grade on that speech I got a 48/50. Pretty excited!
