Both are great bikes. I'm partial to Honda so I would tell you go with the Honda! And Fox makes some good stuff for clothes. Alpine stars are my boots of choice.

Re: which dirt bike?
I second the Honda. Do not cut corners on boots or the helmet. I've seen so many broken ankles on dirt bikes that a nice pair of boots would have prevented.

I have a Ktm 200 and prefer over both Honda and Yamaha which I've owned both prior. However I prefer the hondas 4cyl and yamaha's 2stroke.
Also I highly recommend alpine stars best boots ever made!

Helmet
Boots
Bark busters - must have for trails (prevents broken fingers & clutch levers)
Chest protector
Goggles (try yellow lens's in the trails)
Riding pants (Kevlar, and leather burn and tear resistant)
camel back with additional pockets for protein bars ect.
Any cool long sleeve shirt will do
Knee guards/braces ( I use neoprene helps support your knees to assist in preventing hyper extension - not a fun scenario done it twice to my left knee)
Fanny pack( rear spoiler mounted bag - keep spark plugs and tools, extra goggle lenses) and many other things)

Re: which dirt bike?
In my opinion, id reccomend either a yz250F or crf250r, I used to have a YZ250f and I loved it, i did about 50/50 trail and track riding, and the bike held up excellent in both. even though they are designed as track bikes they were great on the trail because of the suspension travel and the fact that they were built to be flicked around and beat up. I cant say for certain with the ttr230 or crf230, but I know the yzf and crf250r have liquid cooling, and that was always nice to have. With your age/size id say youd out grow the ttr and crf230 too fast (i had a ttr125 when i was 11, and started ridin my dads kx250 at 14 and I was only about 140lbs at that point) just something to think about, also if you really want a bike thats more trails type (with a headlight and lights and stuff) the yamaha wr250f is basically the YZF with the trail lights added and a kick stand (honda has a similar one as well, the crf250x I believe)
like everyone else is sayin, make sure you dont go cheap on boots and a helmet and all. I never had a problem with fox, but ive heard alpinestar and shoei are also very good.
hope this helps!

To be honest neither bike will accommodate what you're looking for. If you want a solid woods bike that will last a long time without much maintenance at all I would look for a used XR400 (or XR250 if you're only 14) on craigslist. Any of the honda XR motors are basically bullet proof yet provide the torque you'd need for a fun rip around the woods with your buddies.
Any of the modern OHC 4 strokes require way more maintenance than any "hop on and have fun bike" should. I just recently dropped over a grand into the clutch alone of my RMZ 450 and I'm still not completely happy with the feel of it. Not to mention the number of times I've done valve shims on it since buying it.
As far as gear, alpinestars boots are beyond compare, but they also fit pretty slim. If your calves are too big like mine they won't work at all, I settled on Fox's economy boots since they're the only ones that fit around my calves semi-comfortably but still provide the protection I need.
A chest protector is really optional, I haven't worn one since I raced mini's, and although I have a neckbrace I haven't really worn it more than a couple practice sessions cause I don't like the way it makes my shoulders sit.
edit: The CRF230 motor is just like what I described (bulletproof), but the geometry of the bike is way off, it feels like trying to ride a 40ft tree trunk around a hairpin corner
