What do you use to read your humidity/temp, what thermostat do you use?

PLEASE show me or link me to what you use to get the best results in reading your temps and humidity, along with what thermostat you use to control your temps. There was one in a sticky thread that at least showed you the humidity and hot/cool temp(s) all in one, but I apparently have gone into full zombie mode (late night..) and can't find it. Anyways, right now I just have one digital probe thermometer on the hot side, and a cheap temp/humidity gauge attached to the glass by a suction cup on the cool side.

I'm trying to pick some experienced brains here on what works.

    Thanks

The best thing for all in one is called an Accurite. It is digital and can be found at most any walmart, target, sears, etc. A lot of people have trouble locating it, but I've always been able to find it with the outdoor thermometers.

Now thermostats are up for huge debate. Some people swear by Spider robotics, but they are VERY expensive. There is apparently a decent one some people can find on amazon, with a fairly reasonable price tag. But it's name escapes me. You can of course opt for the cheap petco/petsmart one made by zilla, but you do get what you pay for and they are known to malfunction. I have three, and while two are rock solid, the third has it's moments and we watch it like a hawk while we save up for better ones.

As Gale said the Accurite digital thermo/hydro is probably the best bet for measuring temps and humidity.
A IR temp gun is also highly recommended for measuring your hot spot surface temps.
We use Herpstat for our main racks and incubator and absolutely love them!
The other one Gale is referring to is the Hydrofarm. It is a decent on/off thermostat for the price. We are currently using one for our QT rack and our Leopard Geckos.
Here is the link for the Hydrofarm
    And the link to SpyderRobotics

I live in Canada. No accurites here, unless you spend $50 to get them off amazon :/

I use a probed digital thermometer for my hot side, and a single thermometer that lists the cool temp and humidity for the other side.

Just got a herpstat 2. Love it

Here is a thread I wrote on heating cages/regulating heat sources/temperature & humidity measurement.

Re: What do you use to read your humidity/temp, what thermostat do you use?

It looks like you're a new user like me. I followed serp merchants advice on the acurite and love it. It makes everything a lot easier and was cheap at about $13 at WalMart. If you go that route, make sure you glue the hot side probe down with a hot glue gun. I found one at Michaels arts and crafts for $4 if you dont have one.

That's the one I was looking for! Thanks.

Hopefully the Wal-mart down the road has it in stock.

One question about the probes. Are you supposed to stick them under the aspen substrate on the glass? or right above it, touching the mulch?

    Thanks

Re: What do you use to read your humidity/temp, what thermostat do you use?

I've noticed some of the higher-end hygrometers/thermometer combos can be prohibitively expensive, one thing you might try checking out is laboratory sources such as:

    http://tinyurl.com/7getdgv

There's a bunch of different companies that make for scientific needs, and you can get some good quality equipment for a decent price. Also, I like the ones that have memory storage. Also: cigar shops. Those people are nutty about humidity and temperature in their precious cigar cases.

Thermostats are a bit more varied, but if you look outside the reptile/exotic/pet industry you can find a much wider selection. It may not be perfectly tuned to what you want and require some jury-rigging, depends how much you want to put up with.

Thermostat probe: attached directly to to the UTH

Thermometer probe: attached to the floor of the cage directly over the UTH (you need to know the hottest part of the tank)
