Cool Gunna be building our first home!

Well, we've finally decided that we want to stay here in Ohio. Up until now we've been renting half of a duplex owned by my in-laws. Its a place to live, but it isn't our own, ya know?

We want a log cabin and we want to build it ourselves. I've already enlisted the help of my brother in law to help and guide us because he builds houses for a living. My father in law is a plumber and he is also on board. My other brother in law is an electrician. Handy, huh? That leaves my wife and I. We don't know crap outside of building racks, but we will have the proper guidance and we have a general knowledge of tools, so I think we'll be fine. I'm as excited to build our home as I am to actually have our first home. It will be a monumental undertaking I'm sure, but that is why it will be so satisfying.

Our plan is to keep it simple and modest. 1,000sq ft or there abouts (not counting lofts). 2 bedrooms, 1 bath with 2 lofts connected by a catwalk, wrap around porch. Wood EVERYTHING. We've got a few floor plans in mind, but we haven't decided 100% on which will suit us best. Over the next couple days we'll be going over our plans with one of the local building/supply companies so can find out what exactly is going to work best. Here a few pics to give yall an idea of what we're thinking.

This is the basic style we like and what our design will be based around.

How sweet is this catwalk between lofts?

Love these cabinets! We want everything to be wood and match.

Anyone else built their own home? We'd love to hear about it!

    I love the idea!
Im no building expert but would say i have some decent experience. My stepdad used to own his own carpentry business so hes pretty good. Me, him, and my brother built a tree house when we were younger then like 3 years ago we demo'd the tree house an built a shed out of it. Before i was even born my stepdad built a shed for my grandparents, and a deck/addition to their house for them. (They live next door). The deck is over 25 years old and not one board has ever had to be replaced.

I love the idea of a log cabin, similar to the comment i made in your vacation thread, and would love to build something similar one day. Its very convenient to have relatives who are all tradesmen! I really like the cat walk. Down stairs though the cabinets and floors would have to be staines different colors though bc as much as i like the look, allthat same color wood is too much for me haha.

Where are you getting the plans from? This is kinda weird maybe but i LOVE looking up house designs and plans and stuff. I took Architecture classes in high school and really enjoyed using the software to design houses from scratch and whatnot. Not enough to become an architect lol, but i love looking at designs!

You need to create a "cabin build" thread and update us regularly!
Cool stuff AK, congrats on a soon to be homeowner!

Wow, I really like that. kinda looks like what I want in a home (minus the kitchen, sorry but I need at least one room that isn't completely wood lol). I wish I was building my own home but not I'm my financial forecast right now. Please keep us up to date with lots of pics.

x2 my exact thoughts. I like the wood look but not 100% haha. One room has to shake it up a bit.

I was under the impression it was cheaper to build your own house? (Excluding huge mansions, im talking within reason here).

Our plans at the moment are based around a few designs we've found, so it isn't set in stone yet. We have to talk to our local company in the next few days to find out what they can offer us that will suit our needs that is close to our plans. My brother in law will probably play a large part in finalizing everything. We have a lot of work still to do, but we know what we want and now is the time that we're going to start getting things set in motion.

For the cabinets and furniture and stuff, we've tossed around the idea of burnt wood (not sure the proper name, but you hit it with a blow torch for a few seconds to darken it and bring out the wood grain). I think that would look nice and help it stand out a little. We also want granite counter tops and a river rock island, like the pic below.

That looks beautiful! Not to mention fun. *jealous* Would love to build my own home someday. Mike had a good idea, make a cabin thread and keep us updated on progress. Congrats.

Dude, THAT'S AWESOME!!!!! A log home is mine and my wife's dream house. My in laws are building one in Arkansas right now. They are older and don't get around so well but they are able to do the work so you should be ok. Please be sure and add some progress photos. I will be following this thread.
