UTH's used on the side?

I'm in the process of getting my first bp, and I bought a Reptitherm UTH 10-20g size. I don't have a tank stand, I've just been keeping the tank on a glass surface. Will the UTH work well used on the side or should I just go ahead and get a stand so I can mount it under?

Heat travels vertically not horizontally... Under tank heaters should be mounted under the tank. Cage stands are not required.

It must be regulated by a thermostat... No matter where it is mounted.

It's called a UTH not a STH. I'm still not understanding why you can't place it under the tank.

I just gathered from the instructions that you weren't supposed to use under the tank if you are setting it directly on a stand that doesn't have an open area (like a coffee table or dresser).

Aaron, can I have two sources of heat be controlled by 1 thermostat? Is that okay?

If you are using 2 heat sources that are identical then yes... But if they are different you cannot.

Zoomed's instructions are terrible and shouldn't be listened too...

There are thermostats designed to control more than 1 heat source. The Herpstat 2 can control 2 seperate heat sources and the Herpstat 4 can control 4.

These cost more than a single thermostat but less than multiple single thermostats.

Just get a couple of rubber "feet" or spacers to put under the four corners of the tank. This will allow airflow between the UTH and the table/bookcase/whatever.

If you read the instructions for that one, it states that it can be and preferable to be mounted on the side. Not sure why but it is pretty clear in the instructions. I can see where the confusion would come from. Open the PDF file:

Ridiculous that they make you dig that deep for a fire hazard warning, but I'm guessing you're referring to this line: "Always use the enclosed rubber feet to elevate your terrarium thus allowing the heat to escape. If unsure of bottom mounting, the side mounting of the ReptiTherm® Heater is the preferred application." To me, they're basically covering their butts if you're too lazy to use the spacers that are provided with the UTH, and too cheap to use a thermostat to regulate the heat output.
