    'Tis Cool!

I work for NCR (we make ATM's, movie kiosks (Blockbuster, Redbox), Point of Sale (Burger King, Chick Fil A, Dunkin Donuts...etc) and produce food service point of sales for stadiums like the Cowboys, Packers, Giants and just did the Belmont Horse race, etc).

Anywhoooooo.....this was announced on my home page this morning when I logged in....I'm such a gadget geek, that I can't wait until my bank rolls this out! Just a matter of time!

So this shaves, what, 20 seconds or so off of my trip to the ATM, and it's just 20 seconds that I spend tapping on a phone earlier? I have a hard time seeing how that's a major benefit unless both of the following are true:

    a) ATMs in your area are extremely busy.

    and

    b) EVERYBODY using your ATM uses this, thus increasing the ATM's "person bandwidth" similarly to how instruction pipelining works on computer CPUs.

I mean, don't get me wrong, it's a neat concept, and kudos to NCR for thinking of it and actually bothering to implement it, but for most people, I don't think it really saves much time.

Also, whoever wrote that press release needs to learn that ATM stands for "automatic teller machine," and thus, writing "ATM machine" is equivalent to "automatic teller machine machine," and therefore redundant.

I don't see any benefit to this. We don't need everything going mobile. It does cancel out my debit card, but I'll need that anywhere I go. Not many people use cash now either.

Very cool! That will make the ATM experience quick and easy!

BTW...We work in similar fields. I work for a food service provider as a designer. We design, build, and install custom millwork, metalwork, and POS stations...Mostly for Universities and Healthcare applications.

The benefit that excites me is not using my debit card and worrying about whether someone has installed a skimmer unbeknownst to me.

    Can't please everyone, I guess.

the bank I go to, installed this unit which can't have that skimmer placed on it. It sticks out like 2-3" and glows. I always test the machine first, by pulling on the card reader, as the ones that scam your cards, are cover ups, and slip over your existing card reader. I use my debit card, not credit card. Debit cards are attached to my bank account only, and I never use my credit card. Anytime I go to the States, and ask for debit, everyone looks at me funny...and ask..."debit?"

Another benefit is you can arrange the transaction on your phone from a safer location than the ATM is, potentially. It doesn't happen often, but it really creeps me out if I have to hit an ATM after dark outside a closed bank. The faster I get back in my car with the windows up, the better!

Thats pretty cool but the ATM i go to is never that busy and its not all that inconvenient for me. For me personally, i dont see a way that this would benefit me too much besides a cool factor. With that said, i can definetly see how this would help at a busy atm in the city or something. If everyone shaves only 20 secs off their transaction time then every 3 people would save a minute of my time being wasted standing in line lol.

Overall cool product. But i see it more as a "because we can" product haha.
