    My big boy...

Kipling the JCP was looking all pretty post-shed, and I had to snap a few photos! He's getting soooo big now... he is a little over 2 years old, so not quite full grown, but it's amazing how much he's grown in those two years. When do you think he'll reach full size? Anyway, here he is:

He looks all tiny when curled up like this...

But to give you an idea of his length (and since he won't stay still once un-coiled), here's his shed skin next to my average-sized cat... on a Queen bed, fyi. Wowza!

LMAO... I'm totally stealing that if we have another caption-themed contest!

A shed skin can't be used to tell a snakes size. Skins are always much longer then the snake itself. They dont even make good estimates. My jcp is only 5 3/4 feet but his sheds have been 10 feet at times.

Generally snakes hit their max size when they are 4 years old.

Yeah, I know... just thought it would show you he's not as small as he looks in those first pics! I think he's a little under 5ft right now, but it's hard to tell.

The best way I have found to measure my longer snake it to let them roam and if the stretch out completely or close to it, remember where the snake starte and stopped and measure that area. If find they have a better chance of going completely straight if they are in a corner like on the couch or where the floor meets the wall. Sometime while holding them if you grab closer to the tail they might dangle straight enough or if they are in your arms just try to maneuver them so they stretch out a little. Isn't the easiest thin to do at times though.

Another way to get a good estimate is to put small pieces of tape or something along a baseboard every 6 or 12 inches, and let the snake crawl along the base board...

Apparently hot tub covers are a good place to stretch out!
I now know that my boa is 37inches long. Plus minus a pine cone.
    Lol

Haha... that's adorable! It almost looks like some fancy sword, with that little stick at the bottom.

Thanks for the suggestions, and maybe I'll try one the next time he's out. But aside from that, ain't he purty? I'm thinking of submitting the second photo in HOTM, and maybe the shed/cat one for the caption POTM.
