First Colombian!
Hey guys,
I just got my first boa the other day and I am very excited! but i do have a few questions. First, how many of you hook train your boas? Secondly, I plan on feeding in the enclosure. Do I want to remove the hides and everything else or just leave them in? Any advice for a boa newbie would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Alex

Re: First Colombian!
i just pull the snake out of the hide and put her on top so she dont go back in it and if she is tame there is really no reason you would need a snake hook hope this helps

Hey Alex!
Congrats on the new addition. I have two boas that are "hook trained." The thing about using a hook is that boas are awesome eaters. I feed my guys 2lb bunnies every 2 weeks or so. This is probably even too much, but after a week they are hunting and ready for more food. You run the risk of getting accidentally bitten by reaching into a hungry boas cage.
Buy a hook and use it every time you take them out. when I open the cage the boas come to the opening looking for the prey. As soon as the hook touches them they know there is no food and that they are being taken out.
Basically the trick is to use the hook every time you go into the cage but NEVER when your feeding. You'll have to keep upgrading your hooks, my hooks are 3 feet long now. haha
Good luck and awesome addition IMO!
Cheers,
Chris.

Congratulations on your new boa. I have hook trained all of my snakes. There is no need to remove everything for feeding...

Also, I'm really excited about holding him. I got him yesterday and he already seems calm. Do I need to wait a week to hold him like I did with my ball or can I just hold him for a little while?

Use the hook and let him settle in for a few days. You don't need to wait as long as a ball.
