    First Lock Ever!

I've been waiting to breed my ball pythons until I had a proper incubator for them. Well, earlier this week I picked up a wine cooler to convert into an incubator so I thought, why not! I paired my pinstripe male and my normal female for what I call my "practice clutch". I know most people stick to the normal breeding season, cooling in the fall, pairing, and getting eggs in the spring, but I kind of want a little more experience before then. That and my other two females won't be ready until fall.

I will admit I didn't expect them to lock, but lo and behold! A lock!

They didn't seem to happy with me poking my head in to snap some pics, but I just had to get a pic.

Now I am curious to see if my mojave male will take to breeding as easily as my pinstripe. Perhaps my first clutch will be a "whose your daddy" clutch??

Since I have never bred before, I will probably bombard you all with questions as they come along. Oh here is one! What is the quickest one of your females has ovulated after being paired?

I don't expect it to be anytime soon, but it would be nice to have kind of an idea so I know when to watch for it.

I wrap up this post with an unrelated picture of my cat in a basket:

Huge congrats on your first lock!

And like my high school prom date said to me, "Here's to many more in the future!"

I dont really keep track of first pairing to ovulation, but I have had a female ovulate 4 weeks after I first felt follicles.

    Congrats on your first lock!

You can breed anytime! sure MOST people breed in the fall but bps will breed year round.

I've only bred two females but it took both 6 months for them to ovy, from Nov to May.

Good luck with your future clutch!

It will be good practice too for your breeding seasons to follow. GL!

Thanks for the advice! Don't know if I will feel anything but worth a try!
