    Best way to ebonize pine?

Anyone know the best way to ebonize white pine? I picked up some minwax ebony stain the other night and tried it on some test pieces I had. After 6 applications I really didnt care for the results. The grain is very dark but the wood around the grain is gray. I dont want to use paint. I was thinking about using speedball black indian ink to dye the wood, handsand with 150 grit and throwing a couple coats of poly on top to shine it up........... I know it can be done but pine doesnt take dark stain very well because its a light colored wood.
