    Seriously, I don't think it's possible to generalize. I have a ball python and a corn snake that both beg nightly to come out and play - and will actually exit their cage on their own when the door is opened. And then there are all the other snakes - they just seem to be happier in their home... Though, I do take them out periodically for play time.

    I might be wrong, but it seems you can actually tell the snake's stress level by how relaxed it is in your hands - i.e by how tight or relaxed it's muscles are. Handling my less stressed snakes are like handling a sock full of jello.
