    Hide Question

I've been trying to find an answer to this, but since I haven't I figured that I may as well come ask myself.

My ball is a pretty big girl, and it's getting to the point that it's kind of difficult to find suitable hides for her anymore. A lot of the ones available in local stores seem to be meant for smaller snakes, and the ones that are big enough don't have a large enough entrance for the thickest part of her body. Recently, she outgrew her log hide, so I've been trying to find a good replacement.

I found a hollow section from a birch tree and was wondering if this would be a safe option for her. When I tried baking it to remove any possibly harmful things, a few areas began to release sap. I haven't been able to find anything indicating that birch sap is toxic to snakes, but I'm not willing to take the chance until I know.

Any suggestions or information would be wonderful, thanks!

These. The large should be more than enough. You can usually find these or things like these at shows.

That could work if I could get it shipped. It seems that it does not ship out of the US, so I'll have to look for something else.

Sadly there are no shows in my area, so that possibility is out.

I agree. The RBI hides are great. They are what I use. If your snake is under 4 ft or weighs under about 2000g, I would suggest the Medium size. Anything bigger, then I would suggest the Large size...

those reptile basics hides really are the best ones...especially since they're so easy to clean and fit in most enclosures really easily. they're pretty much all I use.

exclusive snakes is a great Canadian site that carries some reptile basics stuff, including those hides:
    http://exclusivesnakes.com/Hides.html

also the bean farm ships to Canada, they don't have the reptile basics hides but this one is pretty similar looking:

ALSO if you can find a small cat litter box (unused, obviously) at a dollar store or something you can cut a hole in the side and use that. It's not pretty but its a quick fix, and really inexpensive.

    Re: Hide Question

If you want something cheap and roomy , my full size ball pythons get a kitty litter box, full size, cost about $4 at pet stores or walmart and usually come in pretty colors lol, for a door i just used a soldering iron and burned one in so no sharp edges, but you could just cut a door and melt sharper edges My snakes all fit and seem happy with it hope this helps !

Thank you all for taking time to respond. I will certainly look into things from those sites and dollar/pet stores for substitutes.
