Not true. It gets no hotter in Boca than it does in Gainesville. Small freezers are very efficient these days.

I currently have mice and ASF's. Two are in sterelite containers and some in kritter keepers. More effective than a tank and easier to clean

hrmmm. Well I know that in the long term, I'm going to need to switch to frozen because the inconvenience of getting live is going to be a major pain. I had lost faith in the local reptile store that told me I could keep the snakes together.

But... There is another place which I wish I had gotten my snakes from (hindsight and all that..). It's called Ben Seigal's and I think I just caught them on a bad day once which is why I didn't go back (the smell) but I recently did go back and their store is clean as hell. I was impressed to see Provent a Mite on their shelves too. The guy behind the counter was nice enough to let me take something for free because he forgot to ring it up. So, they redeemed themselves for me. I think that smelly day was just cleaning day. Kind of unrealistic to expect zero smell from a place that holds that many reptiles. And the times I've gone there in years past I never had a complaint. But I digress... I think I'll get my live feeders from them for the time being until I find a freezer on Craig's or something. No idea what's involved in getting a snake to eat f/t after being on live.

Switching from live to f/t somewhat depends on the snake.

Some will be alright with the nom nom dance, while others need the mice brained. My bp won't do f/t. I got him at 2 and a half and he's been on live his whole life. Shows no interest no matter what I try

    Re: Keeping live rodents

I recently just broke down and purchased a chest freezer and started to buy Frozen Thawed rodents in bulk online. I have plenty of room for the freezer in my basement, but it sounds like you're lacking in indoor space for a freezer.

The freezer I purchased claims to only increase electricity bills by $26 a year. I'm sure it would cost a bit more to keep the freezer in a garage, but I bet you'd still save money in the end by buying 6 months of rodents in bulk online (must buy in bulk to make the shipping costs worth it.) And... Can you really put a price on the peace of mind your hubby will have knowing your rodents are far far away from his Lean Cuisines in the family freezer!

You could also purchase a lot of live rodents locally and gas (see the DIY forum) and freeze them yourself to possibly save even more with a freezer.

Ben Seigal is highly highly highly respected in the herp community, a good source for any questions you might have about keeping BPs

Yep, I will definitely be going back to them now that I found everything I needed in one shot at their shop but not at the other (which will remain nameless because I will not slander any business on the open internet).

    thanks!

My 7cuft freezer i bought says on the label it only costs $25 a year to run. It is HUGE and i could never fill it full of rodents. A 5cuft one would be even cheaper to run. You wouldnt be able to even fill that one with f/t rodents probably. So just fill the rest of the space with Ben and Jerry's ice cream for yourself since your hubby is so squeamish. The 5cuft one is only 22"x28"x33" . I know you said your strapped for space but a 2'x2' space isnt that big.
