Snake Awareness Day is almost here! What are YOU doing?

The official Snake Awareness Day will be on May 14th and is quickly approaching. It happens to be on a Monday, so it's not the best day for everyone to organize events. So, here in Central Oregon, we will be promoting snake awareness throughout mid May. A friend and I initiated and have been updating the Snake Awareness Day Facebook page for our state, and our herpetology group and reptile 4-H club will be coming together to do a big public Snake Awareness Day live snake display at one of the local malls on the Saturday before the official Snake Awareness Day. Then some of us from the local herpetology group will also be giving educational presentations at local schools, which the kids always really enjoy.

I'm just wondering if any of you are going to be doing anything special to promote Snake Awareness Day in your communities? I'd love to hear some more ideas on ways to promote snake awareness.

Wow, didn't know about 'Snake Awareness Day'.

To me... Everyday is 'Snake Awareness Day'. I take every opportunity to educate and share my reptile experiences with those that want to listen. Its always nice to share a positive experience with someone who is unfamiliar with snakes or thinks snakes are scary and slimey.

At work it has almost become sort of a joke. I work shift work and every time a new shift starts all my co-workers ask for a new snake story, or show me a new morph etc... Makes work fun.

Lots of snakes, a bunch of horses and an array of other animals small and large!

I'm totally with you on every day being Snake Awareness Day. I think pretty much everyone I know is very aware of how much I like snakes. At work they call me "Snake Wendy" to differenciate me from the the other nurses named Wendy that work at our hospital! I'm sure some people think I'm kind of eccentric, but that's totally fine with me. I do think it's important to educate others about snakes when opportunities arise, to dispell myths and to let others know what cool animals snakes really are.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Snake Awareness Day, it is a new nation-wide campaign that has come about this year as an effort to educate the public about snakes, clear up misconceptions and hopefully help to prevent more of these silly bans that misinformed people with irrational fears of snakes are supporting. Anyway, most of the Snake Awareness Day stuff is coming together on Facebook. The main Snake Awareness Day Facebook page can be found at the following link: Snake Awareness Day. Amost every state has its own Snake Awareness Day Facebook page as well. I intitiated the one for Oregon. Click on my link in my signature to take a look. If you are a Facebook person, I would suggest doing a search for the Snake Awareness Day page from your state to see what the the people close to you are planning and maybe find out if you can participate. "Like" and "share' the page from your state to show your support for raising public awareness about snakes. I would also suggest you take a look at the main Snake Awareness Day page and "like" it and those of other states to show support and to receive updates. It's an easy way to get the word out and raise awareness that something like Snake Awareness Day even exists and to let people know that there are plenty of people who think snakes are awesome!

I will be out of town on business on May 14th so I had my awareness day today. I did a brief presentation/petting zoo today for my neighborhood. had beardies, leopard geckos, ball python morphs, and the food that we breed for them. Happy Herping to all!

I bet people enjoyed the petting zoo! The events you do with live reptiles that people can touch always seem to be meaningful to people who have not been around them before. Monday is definitely not going to be an easy day for lots of people to do things for Snake Awareness Day. That is why my herp group has elected to do our activities throughout mid May when we can work them in. We have stuff planned from May 9th through the 17th, and that way we cover a lot more ground and can involve a lot more people. I think it will be a lot of fun and hopefully will help to eliminate some people's unfounded biases against snakes.
