Curious about bp's age

When I got Max from the pet store (I quickly learned this was not a good idea) the guy told me he was probably around four months old. Since most of what he told me was wrong I was curious to see if anyone knew a good measure to go by. I'm not sure of his weight yet, but he looks like he's about 15 or so inches. What's considered hatchling age, juvenile, sub adult, and so forth?

They all grow at their own rate, and if he came from the pet store his growth was probably stunted due to poor husbandry/feeding. Can you post a picture? There is no way to say for sure but if he is only 15 inches I wiuldn't think he isn't a day over 2 months.

This is from the day I brought him home. He was in a 10 gal tank 12"H and 10"W (I've since upgraded). In thinking about it, he wasn't too far off the length of that tank, which was 20", so maybe he's closer to 17-18 inches. I'll properly measure him when I take him out tomorrow.



Do you happen to know the age ranges for juveniles and such?

Ok, from that picture I'll stick with about 2 months old.

I don't know of any estiblished rule on ages, but I consider BP's:

Hatchlings: up to 350 grams

Juvinals: from 350-800

Subadult: 800-whatever the individual settles into

Adult: once they stop consistently growing

there is no real way to tell without knowing the actual date.

I have two from the same clutch, one is about 22ish inches and just at 500g while the other is almost 36 inches now and almost 1100g. They are both almost 2 years old

Ok, thanks! I'm going to pick up a scale this weekend so I can measure his weight.

Yes, I would pick up a scale

Try to find one that you can fit a container on that is approx. big enough to have a full size Ball Python in, just for the future

I picked one up at Wal-Mart for $10 that works very well, I can put a mixing bowl on top of it, zero the scale, and then put my snakes into it to weigh them.

Yup. You can't really tell the exact age of a snake based on it's size.
They all grow at their own rate. I have 4 females born in the same month that range from 200-550 grams. They were all the same size when I first got them. They are fed at the same time and started on the same sized meals.

The youngest one is the largest . And the oldest one is ironically the smallest of the bunch.

And depending on the type of food and care, a snake could be stunted.
