Thermostat setting on rack

I'm running my rack before I put my snakes in, using eco earth as a substrate, and my thermostat is set to 100 but the temp inside is only 75... What settings do you use for your set up, and/or should I switch to a less dense substrate?

My thermostats are set at the temps I want in the tubs...Just move the probe around a little until you find the sweet spot...

When you say "the temp inside" do you mean ambient temps? Belly heat (flewwatt, heat cable, etc.) is not intended to raise ambient temps, only the hot spot. Are you measuring the surface temp of the tub directly over the heat source? What are you measuring it with?

Oohhh lol, no I have an acurite in there, and yes its measuring ambient temps. How do I know the hot spot is hot enough? The substrate doesn't feel all that warm.

You can set the outdoor probe (the one with the wire) right on the substrate. I usually need to put something on it to weight it down so it is not moved around (which will still happen anyway).

The other thing I will do is temporarily tape the probe down right to the inside tub surface above the hotspot. This will give me a worse case scenario as to what temps the snakes will be exposed to, as mine love to move the substrate out of their way constantly. For example, I believe if i measure at the top of my substrate I may only get 88° or so, but on the bare tub im reading 92°. This would mean if I made the substrate surface temp 92°, the tub may be like 96°, which would probably be approaching uncomfortable level for the snake.

How thick of a layer of substrate do you have in there?
The substrate should not feel warm bc your body temp is 98.6 and their hotspot is only 88-90 degrees.

I put the probe on the bottom and the temp read 84 when the stat was at 100, so I adjusted accordingly and I'll check again. The substrate is about an inch or slightly less.

I recommend getting a temp gun for measuring hot spots, and use the Accurite for ambient temps.
