Powerhouse MALE or FEMALEs, for future breeding?

I know your suppose to build up your females first, then get a few males down the road once females almost get too breeding size.

I wanted to here your guys thoughts or suggestions on my question.

For someone looking to start off breeding in the future, Wouldn't it be better too buy a bunch of single and double gene females, and just one powerful triple or quad male? and pump out a bunch of pythons.

OR

Buy only a few triple/quad females and one triple/qaud male and breed that way, and would get more higher end triple and possible quads from the hatchlings


Just wanted to hear what the more experienced python keepers have to say about that

Personally I am doing mostly 2 (with one 3 gene) females and 2 gene males. THis was to build a strong diverse collection on a reasonable budget. If you can afford a few quads, knock yourself out. I have already pieced up some males as exceptional examples come up, but I have more females (4.10).

Ideally, that would work...but let's say that your single powerhouse male is a reluctant breeder and doesn't come around till he's 3-4 years old...something that's known to happen and has happened to me(albeit not with a high dollar animal). Your idea then becomes lost time and lost money. Hedging your bets on a single male is risky.

Not to mention that if you come running out of the gates with a lot of high end animals, you're cutting down on who you will appeal to by a significant amount, and you'll find yourself up against some stiff competition and may not be able to move them so easily.

Very good points, makes sense about producing the highend morphs and being limited market. and also the not breeding part.

I got my first triple gene on the way very soon. and am just trying to look ahead too the future and plan things right.

This is how most do it. Powerhouse females are not easy to come by plus by the time that power house female is ready to breed there will be more "powerful" powerhouse males available.

Personally, I would concentrate on morphs that you like, and maybe give some thought to selectively breeding, and not just "pumping out a bunch of pythons"...

I Just worded it wrong, Im Choosing qauilty pythons. that part of the post came off wrong.

Im just thinking for the future and what would be the best way to go, just like seeing other peoples views on subjects.

Seems like if I would get one triple/qaud male, and a bunch of duble gene females. when the time comes I get hatchlings, I would have more morph combos to work with.

There are certain morphs that will be my goal, but would also like other options and it seems like that would be the best way to go about it, except for some of the good points mentioned

I couldnt afford dbl or trip gene animals to start with. so I bought a couple low end single co dom males and a boat load of the $15 normal girls from the shows. kept a couple female singles traded and sold the rest. now im buying dbl co dom males to breed to the hold back girls. I wouldnt put all my eggs in one basket with only one male tho. get a couple or buy proven breeders. keep in mind there is a lot to be said about quality normals. i've always been selective on my normals because pairing them with the right morph does make a difference. i use high yellow bright normals with pastels, butters and such and i use my darker normals with the cinnamons, sables and what not. remember this is not a get rich quick game. takes years to make a name for yourself. produce quality not flood the market with "highend" crap. and be careful not to step on anybodys toes or you may have trouble moving what you have. good luck and happy herping.

I would get as many female single or double gene females you can and not worry about males until the females are close to size. With the market being the way it is something you cant afford now you may be able to afford in a couple years with ball pythons dropping prices.

My suggestion is to buy a group of the best looking base females you can find. and grow them up for 2+ years, while doing this save your money and when the time comes sink a good load of money in to a powerhouse male. So say get you 3 female pastels and 2 female enchi's, grow them up and when you have the money get you a super enchi desert pin male..
