Your best bet is to go with a canister filter. Like an eheim. When you put the hose in it should reach to the bottom. If not, you can lengthen the hose. They filter very well and if you put bio balls in one of the baskets you create a healthy bacteria colony to keep water clear. When I was using canister filters for a large aquarium I had I used carbon in a mesh bag in one basket (the carbon and mesh bag are both available at pet stores), bio balls in another basket, and the regular fiber filters in another. I'd spray out the filters during cleaning time with my shower head.
