Maybe its similar to how with humans females naturally have more fat since they carry the babies...
(thats a bad way to put it, but no ladies i am not calling you fat. Im speaky as in ratios only!)
Our females get a little extra sometimes, but nothing substantial unless they are breeding, in which case they are fed practically whatever they want. For sake of argument lets say I have 1.1 balls that aren't breeding and they both weigh 1,000g and I have two rats. One rat is 100g and one is 120g. The female will be offered the slightly larger rat. Fat males make lazy breeders, fat girls lay nice big clutches and gain their weight back better after laying. Hopefully that makes sense.
