What's in a name?

For me it is the characteristics of the BP that drew my attention. once I realized they are a manageable 3-5 feet, docile, and although shorter is an impressive heavy bodied snake with a real head (not a worm-like head). That was what got my attention first. Since then I find I love more and more snakes in general which is strange I think BP's are like a gateway drug. Only had one for a few weeks (dying to get one for the last couple years) and already want a few more.

Say someone put two boxes in front of me, one marked Soul Sucker, and one marked...Damp Squib... (lol) I'd definitely be more enticed by a cool name like Soul sucker, even though Damp Squib could be a lushhh snake

I personally think a lot of ball morph names are lame, if not outright ridiculous...so no, in my opinion, the names don't contribute that much, if at all to their popularity. The major contributors to the popularity of balls(again, IMO) are the huge volume of color and pattern morphs and combinations of them, the relative ease of care, and the very manageable size and housing demands.

I think it has to do with lots of things why they are so popular. Managable size, docile personality. Also I think it is more visual, seeing all the amazing morphs, more so than their names. All though, I would love to see damp squib....Haha..

Personally I would never lay money down on a bay that may or may not contain a snake or a squid I wold want to see but I must admit the Damp Squid does spark some interest.

As a total newbie to BPs, I can tell you that I got into them because my boyfriend wanted a snake, so I told him I would buy him one for his birthday. Now I spend more time and attention on the hobby than he does! lol

But originally, I read on a lot of different websites that BPs are good "beginner" snakes. They're relatively easy to handle, hard to kill, and don't get too big. I like the way they look in terms of head and general body shape, and they get to be pretty impressive looking without actually being dangerous.

When I started looking into BPs, I learned more about morphs and I do think it's pretty cool that there's such a big hobby built around breeding and selling the snakes, sometimes it comes across as a sort of trading card game.

Also, as someone just getting into snakes, I'm not about to go drop $800+ on some amazing morph. I got a pastel because it was an affordable snake that was visually appealing, and also has the potential to produce some cool offspring if we ever decide to go that route.
