I would use cypress mulch over astro turf. Astro turf is pretty ruff and hard to clean. Make sure you either get cypress from the pet store or Grade A that doesn't have any artificial colors/chemicals and isn't a mix of multiple woods.

Astro turf will be just the same as reptile carpet. You'll never be able to sanitize it properly and it will be a breeding ground for bacteria.

You should probably switch to cypress.

    Re: Astro turf for Substrate?..

See, this is why I nearly laughed out loud at my vet when she told me to use Astro Turf instead of aspen shavings... "You can never really clean shavings... Astro turf is so much better!"

Gotta love vets... I just smiled and nodded, then laughed like a hyena once we were gone.

To the OP, I say switch

Cypress is 100% better imo. If you think cypress will be a pain i would even suggest newspaper over astro turf

Would a cypress mulch ON TOP of astro turf be too wacky?

I wouldn't see the point, especially if you are using a UTH you are going to have issues with heating. If you are using a UTH 1/2" of Cypress is about the most you can use without causing issues

I have never used Astro turf but why hate on the Repti-carpet? I find it very easy to clean and it doesn't smell or have bacteria issues. Some of mine I have been using for months and they are still as fine as the day I bought them! I just rinse them in hot water and good as new
