I am not on top of the latest camares but my 10 year old Fuji still takes great pics. Make sure whatever you get allows you to manually adjust for lighting/appature and has a good focus. A lot of cheap cameras don't allow such tweaking and use the flash when it's not called for.

In other words, if you want good pics, stay away from point-and-shoots.

Are you looking for beginner as in inexpensive and decent quality or something with fancy removable lenses that are more expensive? There are quite a few super cheap point and shoot cameras that can still take great photos, but IMO some of the cheaper ones require more effort from the photographer to get good picture quality.

I like most of the inexpensive coolpix cameras, usually run about $80-$120 but I would love to have something like a rebel digital SLR. The difference in price is a few hundred dollars...but as previously mentioned the point and shoots require more effort to get them to do what you want. Less bells and whistles to be confused by, but more limitations require you to be more resourceful.
