Ill give you a dope trick.
In the aquarium hobby, we use c02 for plants, and you can either use a paintball tank, a regulator, a check valve, and a drop checker, so you know the flow speed.
You can also rig a diy c02
2l bottle
Yeast
Sugar
Warm water
You can have 5 of these setup @ once, and im sure it could pump out more than enough c02 if your wanting to gas the mice.
Also, these will run for about 2 months if given the proper amounts of each used
(And inch or 2 sugar, tbsp yeast, water inch from the top.
Just run a tube from the bottle to the chamber, you can even have all the tubes connect into a super gas tube.
Since each will produce alittle c02 constantly for a few months, you can use a bunch, and the chamber will always be "readyy to gass"
Its way cheaper because they can charge all sorts of money for c02 refills..
They also use nitrous in paintball tanks... i wonder if that would have a similar effect, but u suppose c02 is best..

Needs to be CO2 if you want it to be humane
Dry ice is another option

I feel like dry ice would be the easiest, and probobly cheaper.
Also that kids off a good bit of c02, just make sure you dont make a
"Mouse shrapnel bomb"
Pressurized containers always pose a threat to your saftey. A few small holes lower on the box should help

I may continue to buy live rats for my bp, and use this method, since dry ice is cheap, and the leftover dry ice can make a neat, foggy sink look (im such a kid)
Question, when doing this, if i leave the rat in long enough to become unconcious, but not dead, is that considered humane (some snakes apparently only eat somthing with a pulse, so maybe this is a way to subdue the rat long enough for a kill by the snake... )

I wouldn't be concerned with it being humane or not (I wouldn't view this as inhumane as you are just knocking them out and not hurting them), this issue is if the rat wakes up before your snake kills it. they can really spaz out hen they wake up and be extremely dangerous. I would just wait until they are dead.
The most important thing to remember when using Dry Ice is hat the rats cannot come into direct contact with the Dry Ice. it will burn them horribly. this is why the container within a container method is used. To separate the rats from the dry ice. it also helps to regulate the CO2. If you fill the chamber with CO2 too fast it will cause the rats pain (this is an issue with any form of CO2 euthanasia. You need to start with a slow flow so the rats are knocked out then up the flow to finish them off painlessly.

Thankyou for clearing up multiple questions before they were answered!
I can understand the rat freaking out, so i will try for a freshly dead in the future.
Also i didnt even think about a slow flow at first to knock them out, you probobly just saved a bunch of mice from pain.

I will be using a paintball remote like this one.
http://www.amazon.com/DLX-Coiled-Pai.../dp/B003U2IPVG
screw the end with the quick disconnect into an air tight container and seal with silicone. Run another hose from the container into a bucket of water to let the air escape. Hook the other end of the remote to a co2 bottle.
