The Hunger Games -- Suzanne Collins (not the movie)
I just finished the book, as I told myself I'd read the book before the I go see the movie, and boy am I glad I did so because my friend told me when he went to see it, they left out so much of the book in the movie. I can't stand when directors do that, like stick the book please!!!!!! Anyway, if you have read the book, please share your thoughts and tell me your favorite part of it. My personal favorite part was probably when Peeta says he's in love with Katniss.

Re: The Hunger Games -- Suzanne Collins (not the movie)
I had a lot of mixed feelings about those books. They were well written. The story was engaging in that it kept you turning the page to find out what happens next. The characters were all beautifully developed. And I thought the futuristic vision of North America was unique and very interesting.
But...the entire premise of the story was deeply disturbing and took all the pleasure out of the book for me. I don't mind violence in a story...even hard, graphic violence. And I can tolerate "reality" in which children sometimes get hurt. But a story whose entire plot-line is based on intentionally inflicting hard, graphic violence on children....
I won't be seeing the movie.

I did not read the books, but I did see the movie on Friday night, and enjoyed it very much.

I was absolutely in love with the story... very much disliked her writing style. It felt haphazard at times, and at the very end of the series, it feels like she just got bored and was rushing to spit an ending out. It is flying forward throughout the entire series/book.. and the end, while I like the outcome for the characters/plot, just kind feels like an "eh, I'm done, what can I do to get this o er with" moment.
Overall, however, her ability to tell a story and paint a picture really is amazing, and I loved the series.

I read the entire series and I loved it. The subject matter is a little heavy to be considered a YA series I think.
I do think they left some pretty important stuff out of the movie. I don't think they focused enough on the fact that Katniss isn't really in love with Peeta at this point but is being forced to act that way for survival.
I also didn't like how she came to have the MockingJay pin. I thought that in the book it showed more hints to an underlying rebellion. They also didn't talk enough about District 13 and what happened there.

Re: The Hunger Games -- Suzanne Collins (not the movie)
I really enjoyed the first two books, but I felt really let down when I finally finished the third. To me it felt extremely rushed and I felt that the quality of her writing suffered a lot in that...
Part of me really wants to go see the movie, but part of me is extremely against it - because if it's good I'll get sucked right back in again just to be let down when the third one comes about =/

I read all 3 books and saw the movie on opening night. I really really liked the books and thought the movie was a well done adaptation. I realize there's stuff that's got to be cut and I thought the director or whomever makes those decisions did a good job.
One thing that irked me didn't have anything to do with the movie, but the audience. During the times where they'd flash to Gale back in 12 when Katniss was being intimate with Peeta, the audience (made up of mostly teen girls) would laugh. I totally don't understand why they thought this guy's pain was funny. I mean how would you feel if the girl you loved was being broadcast over the whole nation kissing another guy!? Makes me concerned for the future if the next generation thinks stuff like that is funny.
Overall though, I really hope they make the next 2 books into movies (I don't see how they won't).

I've read the first book after seeing the very first previews for the movie, and I can say whole heatedly that overall the books (at least the first one I've read so far) are (IMO) a ripoff of Battle Royale by Koushun Takami (a 1999 novel, the first Hunger Games came out in '08 or so I believe?). But, I'm still excited to see how the movie differs from the book and think I'll enjoy it anyway.
And I definitely recommend reading Battle Royale and seeing the 2000 movie after the novel if you've enjoyed The Hunger Games.
