    First vet trip

I take Kiva to the vet for her first checkup tomorrow! Hopefully she is still doing well in spite of all the housing issues I have been having. She will be getting a new home soon (hoping to have the tub setup done and ready by the weekend). We will see.

So good news and bad news.
Good news is that her setup is good. The bad news is that she has mites. She probably got them from the breeder or one of the other animals at the expo. Going home now (with a few stops for cleaning supplies and such) to break down the setup and begin extermination of the stupid pests.

The vet gave me some medicine to clean the tank with and she will be getting a soapy soak (in dawn) 3 times a week and normal water soaks the 2 days in between. Not happy about the mites. If I didnt want her gender verified (not that I had any doubts of course) we would not have found them. They were in her vent and came flying out when he probed her. She's not going to like her baths but she will be a lot more comfortable when this is all done with.

Provent a mite and reptaid spray I think its called works great without so much soaking. That seems a little extreme might stress the snake out. Lll reptile has a really good direction on how to get rid of them.

Rich at Reptile Basics has reptile relief spray too. I have heard Pam is pretty much unstoppable though. I have a can/bottle of each in case I ever need to go to war. Thankfully haven't had to use them, so no personal experience on which is better and why.

Reptile relief thats the name I was thinking of lol. Well anyway heres the link from LLL
    http://lllreptile.com/info/library/c...h-snake-mites/

Ive used it a couple times without any flaws.
Basically let the snake sit in a tub sprayed down with reptile reliefe. While hes in there take out everything from the cage clean it off bleach disinfect it, then bomb the cage with provent a mite. I close the doors and let it sit in there until it disperses. After its dry to the touch in the cage I get some type of disinfectant and wipe down the inside of the cage because the PAM doesnt kill the eggs. Also after 15 minutes of the snake in the reptile reliefe I take him/her out and clean the snake off from the relief then let it soak in water for another 15 minutes. This will take off all the dead mites that were killed from the reptile relief. It will also rehydrate your snake because the reptile relief pretty much suffocates the mites to death and often your snake will be thirsty afterwards. Just make sure you wash the spray off of it.
Its also a good idea to spray down your substrate (I recommend using newspaper or paper towels until there gone) with the pam and let it dry before putting the snake in there, Because the mites like to hide underneath the substrate.
But anywho these directions will tell you that also this is just how I do it with a few modifications. Good luck!

EDIT: you might have to do it once more in a couple weeks if they were not all killed.

The regimen given by the vet is as follows:
Remove all furnishings from the tank and put them in a very hot dishwashing cycle. Thoroughly wash the tank with the medical solution (I will get the name of it when I get home later) every 10days. The furnishings only have to get washed once but they will not go back into the tank until the pests are gone. This medical wash will be done 3-5 times.
Kiva will be getting daily baths. 3 times a week it will have dawn soap in it. The rest will just be water.
Her tank is kinda pitiful right now. She has paper towels down (I may keep that down even after the extermination), 2 cardboard box hides aka one end of a soda box and the bottom of a kureg kcup box and a cereal bowl with water in it. It makes me sad to look at it. But its all for the best. She will probably be a lot more comfortable without the little parasites chewing on her
