Quarantine

I purchased a 550 gram CB female this week and she will be arriving Friday morning. I had a couple of questions about quarantining new snakes. From what I have read from other posts I get the general idea, but I was wondering if there is anything in particular to worry about. Also, I just built a new rack to house the snakes I plan on getting, so is it ok to put the new snake in the rack with my 1 male BP as long as they are kept from touching each other and I used seperate items to clean both tubs with? Any other suggestions would also be appreciated.


P.S. I will take some pics when I am transfering her from the box to the tub and post them for you all.

I'm very paranoid about my quarantining. It is ideal to keep the new snake as far from your established ones as possible (ie in another room). It is better to at least put it on the other side of the room, rather in the same rack.

Definitely use different tools when caring for the new snake, and always deal with quarantines last.. after your established snakes.

After your handle the new snake, or touch anything in her cage, wash your hands for 30 seconds with antibacterial soap.

Oh, and update your sig.

well in another room is out of the question, so I will try to be extra careful in their indirect contact with each other. From my readings, quarantine should last approximately a month. Is this correct?

I will update my sig when I get her on friday....and i need a name for my new female breeder mouse.

I'm very paranoid when bringing new animals into my collection as well. I do a strict 90 day quarantine in a completely seperate building from my shop for all new arrivals.

If you don't have the luxury of a seperate building or even seperate room, a good practice is to handle and care for quarantined animals on their own special day. Pick a day of the week where all you will do is handle the quarantined snake (cleaning, feeding, etc) and on that day, do not touch any of your other snakes or enclosures.

Also, if you're going to house a new snake in the same rack with an existing animal, pre-treating tubs with Provent a Mite is a pretty good idea.

Giving the new animal it own day for handling, feeding, and cleaning is a great idea. Thanks Adam.

My little rack holds four snakes now....but I only will have two. I will make sure to put them as far away from each other as possible (a two tub divider)

I also quarantine for a full 90 days. I think it's more important to go longer for boids than say colubrids because of IBD, though pythons usually aren't asymptomatic like boas can be.

Ah whatever, 90 days is good whatever the snake is.

everytime i get a new one they go to my brothers for at least 90 days
