god loves mothers
I have been interested in snakes scince I was three years old. Now I am sixteen and with out a snake. owning a snake has not been realistic as to where to put it and care (I only new the different kinds not what they need to live) but scince we've moved I have room and have researched basic snake care as well as specific species. My problems are as follows:
1) I want my parents to pay
2) My mom keeps saying no
3) I don't now if I want a California King snake, a bp, or if given a opprotunity an emeral tree boa (I know etb's are out of the question but at some point would be fun to have) I have researched these alot.
My mom says she doesn't want a snake. I keep telling my mom she should learn about snakes so that they aren't as scary. Then I get to the feeding part. I tell her that she doesn't have to feed them. And here is where I am stuck "I don't want rats or mice or whatever it is they eat in my house" lol. My dad would be like well who would pay for it and well you owe us some money for that bass amp why should we lend more money to you. So I don't bother asking my dad for any thing. You guys are smart help me think of a way to get this snake asap.

Why can't you save your own money? I mean.. why should your parents pay for something they don't even like? You may impress them with your maturity if you tell them you will pay for everything yourself, as well as care for it completely yourself.
As far as convincing your mom.. if you agree not to ever make her so much as look at the snake, you may have some luck. Consider feeding the snake frozen/thawed mice/rats anyway. Then there will be no live rodents in the house, and the only time they'd be there is the day you feed the snake (assuming you have a pet store that sells frozen rodents)
Cali kings and BPs are both awesome.. as are ETB's.. but tree boas are certainly not a beginner's snake.. plus that they are EXPENSIVE.
Good luck.

I agree with Shelby, why should your parents be the ones to pay for the things that you *want*? I think you're being not only rude but unreasonable as well for asking your parents to pay for somthing that they do not want in the house. Trust me, I understand that it would be nice of them to do so if they felt it necessary, but I truely do not understand that you want someone to pay to put somthing in their home that they don't want to begin with.
My mom was the same way about my getting a BP (or a snake in general) and though I pay rent I still respected her enough to talk it over with her seeing as how it is her house. Of course the first time I asked she said no... I did research and found as many sites as I could for about two months and when I learned somthing interesting about a certain species I'd let her in on it. I'd ask her to read care sheets and look at pictures, and she did. Even though she still 'hated' snakes, she 'allowed' me to get one about a month and a half ago. Since we've had our new addition my mom's said such things as, "Awwwwe, look how cute she is," and she's found that she doesn't hate snakes as much as she thought she did.
So, I think you should talk to your parents about first about getting one, about how you're going to have a locking lid, he/she will stay in your room, you'll keep your door closed, so on and maybe try to get your mom interested in it a bit. When you actually get them to say that it's alright then you worry about paying for it, but make sure that you're not only able to pay for the snake itself and the set-up but that you have enough money to pay for vet bills.

I agree with the others. If you are 16, you are old enough to earn your own money to pay for a snake and its needs or wait until you can afford one to have one. My daughter is 12 and bought her own Cali king and pays for the food, I paid for the setup, and we split any vet costs. Your parents shouldn't have to pay for everything you want, and anything worth having is worth earning.

Yes I think it is very possible to earn your own money to buy the snake. I bet once you get it, your mom might like it! I got my ball as my first snake after forever researching which type to get and I am VERY happy. I am so glad that I went with a ball. Hope this helps!
Proud owner of a Male Ball python since January 10th 2005. He is my first snake. If I give you any advice, it is from personal experience and tons of research. I am in no way an expert.

Here's a thought too.. work at a pet shop! I work at a reptile specialty place, and it's a very cool job. That way you'd have the money to pay for the snake, and even if mom keeps saying 'no', you get to hang out with snakes anyway.
Something to keep in mind.

hey i had a hard time getting my mom to let me get a snake to. but you cant expect them to pay for it if you want it especially if they dont want it. i proved to my mom that i wanted it and saved up and she let me get it. if you were my kid, and you wanted me to buy you a snake, even if i had snakes id still say no and id tell you to buy your own. getting them to buy you one just aint realistic. prove that your mature enough to handle it and pay for it, youll have a better chance in getting it i guarentee it.

hey man im 16 and ive had a bp for about 9 months now (wow the time has flown) and my mom was dead set against it and my dad was "scietifically intregued" i believe thats how he put it.but they finally agreed that i could keep my bp if i paid for everything myself
(i guess i should tell u that i bought it with out there permission on a dare from my friend with no knowledge whatsoever of how to care for it and i borught it home set it up in an empty terrarium and for two days no-one noticed it) (and i borrowed money from my friend to buy the snake itself)
so its nine months later i got a job working part time at a local bookstore found this site (boy did they set me striaght fast) my bP is flourishing beautifully and my parents respect me a lot more now because i have shown that i dont need to do everything through them and that im growin up a bit
now the hardest part for me was getting the job that was more or less luck but after that except for the occaisional snag monetarily ive been able to support my snake and i have extra cash and i paid my parents back for my guitar stuff
