Old wives' tales - trouble or silly superstition?

Ok, so it has taken nearly a decade but my 1.0 human and I are going to try to elope next month. How in the world we are going to pull this off is beyond me, but we're working on it. One big hurtle is, although I don't want a fancy dress, I do want a white dress. However, even the simple bridesmaid gowns have 6 month ordering times! I'm fairly handy with a needle and thread, been sewing since I was a kid, and a veteran of many a Renaissance Fair costume so I believe I could do a pretty good simple dress. I could get it done in time and it would be tailored exactly to me.

Superstition says if you make your own dress, "Every stitch will be a tear you will shed in your marriage." Now if there is some sort of backlog then I'm ok, because we've had it pretty rough so I believe there has already been more than enough crying to stitch a dress, but I have to admit that, while I normally cast these silly things aside, I don't want to mess this one up. Maybe a little encouragement is in order? Thanks in advance for any stories or advice!

Also, anyone know where I can get some reptile hair picks? That'd be so fun!

PS I do find it funny that BP.net is the one forum I'm a part of that has the highest ratio of female members such that I can post something like this and not get immediately blasted! Ha!

Never heard that tale before. Im pretty sure my aunt madr her own dress and she has been w/ my uncle for like 30 years...

I've never heard this one either. Just throw some salt over your shoulder - that is supposed to fix everything - lol

Im sure thousands of people in the 'old days' had to sew their own dresses. I feel like marriage was more successful back then than today's standard. With that said, it may actually help you? Haha.

I come from an Asian background, so I hear a lot of superstitious wives tales. I don't really believe in such things, but my mother and relatives do. They always make me counter the original superstition with something equally "lucky". I guess you can try something like that...

If you're really worried, get a friend or someone else to sew the dress. And you can design it and overlook the process?

I eloped myself... best thing I ever did in my life. Spent $80 for the marriage license, $20 for the justic of the peace, $40 for the pizza... 14 years, 2 kids, 7 snakes, 2 dogs, 2 turtles, 4 birds, and fish later... we're still living our happily ever after.

But then... my wedding dress was off-the-rack...

You all are cracking me up here! So first I'm going to throw some salt around and then grab a bunch of lucky charms. (Would the cereal work?) These comments are the best! We are so worried about money and time you all are just what I needed.

And YES white! Of course, I'm one of those "keep out of direct sunlight" almost albino humans, so even white is going to look a little ivory on me... but that works because my little golden crested flower girl will hopefully cooperate for some photos and she's going to look amazing on the white satin and that's what's really important, right?
