    Heating Set Up

Just want to run this by you guys to make sure I have the tank set up well. First my room is at a set constant temp, not high enough for my BP, but regulated by a thermostat so that i can have one more constant. The tank is glass, with an overhead light (red) and a UTH. I have a thermostat which both the light and UTH are running through. I have the thermostat's probe attached to the center of the UTH. Temps currently read, 83.5 cool side, and 88.5 warm side, making sure the warm side's temp probe is close to the bottom of the tank to pick up the UTH. This all sound good? and hum is currently at 52%.

    THanks!

are both the heat bulb and UTH on the same thermostat? (as in both plugged into the exact same thing?)

Yeah. My theory for attaching them both to the same thermostat is that it's maintaining the same area. Eg when the pad cools past the set temp, it turns both on and keeps the tank regulated.... Not sure if I explained that well. It seems to be working for the bast couple hours anyway. Should I buy another thermostat for the lamp?

The issue is that they both require vastly different amounts of power (heat lamp needs at least 50 watts if not more and the UTH probably only pulls 5-15 watts) this means that either the UTH is going to get really hot because the thermostat is trying to power the heat bulb or the heat bulb isn't going to do anything because the thermostat isn't sending out much power. the first situation is far more likely.

I would get another thermostat (what thermostat are you using by the way?)

What type of thermometers/hygrometers are you using?

    Re: Heating Set Up

That makes sense, my question is that. The thermostat should be regulating it's temp by the setting and the probe. The probe is attaches to the UTH. So it should only turn on or off based on the probe aka the UTH's temp right? If so the UTH should not be overheating? I do agree that the lamp turning on and off every few minutes is A prolly bad for the bulb, and B not the most efficient. I will look into a new thermostat tomorrow.

I use the 500R from zoo med, and have 2 digi thermometer and a hydrometer that is also a digital.

I would hold off on getting another 500r as they aren't the best. I would get a better thermostat for the UTH and use the 500r on the heat lamp as it is less important.

    here are 2 good thermostats:

The Hydrofarm, it costs $30 and can be purchased on Amazon, but doesn't regulate temperatures as good as it should. it will do what you need it to do but should be replaced with a better thermostat when possible.

The Herpstat is the best you can get, but has a higher price tag. Herpstats start at $99 but there are more expensive/better models available. they regulate temperatures significantly better than the hydrofarm can.

    do your thermometers have probes?

    Re: Heating Set Up

I will forsure look into those, I took your advice and am getting a rack so this set up is kinda temp... I will be getting my student loans here before long, and should be able to grab some more gear. They do have probes, the I made sure the probe on the side of the UTH is on the bottom by the UTH. Inside the tank of course

alright, very good. if you get a good thermostat now, you will be able to use it when you get your rack. So it's not like it will be for nothing.

    Re: Heating Set Up

Forsure, I'm just really wanting to make sure I have things all set up lol. I know this is not 100% ideal and won't be till I get my rack and snake room. But I think given the temps hum% and soon the bigger hides he should be happy

Thanks for all the advice bro, appreciate your helpfulness.

No problem, it's nice to see that you want what's best for your snake. Unfortunately not everybody out there does.
