    Snakes are evil.

So here I was in my local petco(why is it always petco) and true to form I was in the reptile section checking out there supply of big healthy reptiles(no sarcasm here). All of the sudden a older lady and her grandkids stop to look a ferrets when the little boy asked to see the snakes. The lady, without skipping a beat , declared that snakes are evil. she wouldn't even let her grandson go look. I told her snakes were not evil but she spun around and escorted her kids away. Really evil really? I understand people's irrational fear of snakes and there ignorance and I know I'm not gonna change anyone's mind inside a pet store but I just kinda thought it was sad that this old bitty wouldn't even let her grandson look at the corn snakes .

I'm always baffled by the widespread fear and ignorance people harbor against snakes... for no apparent reason.

It's always interesting when I ask people WHY they're afraid of snakes. They're always either stumped, blurting out incorrect facts/assumptions, or shrugging it off with something like "because they're snakes and they're gross, duh."

My Mom is terrified of snakes and admits to it, I got her to pet one of mine recently but even that was a stretch. She thinks that they are beautiful (referring to my Pastels and spider BP's), that they are just another animal, and her fear is totally irrational but she has no problem with my girlfriend and I keeping them. She just wants us to make sure we keep them properly and safely.

If my mom can have this view point, why can't other people... I mean all I have to do is say the word snake and she gets all jittery.

Yeah, I sometimes forget how misunderstood snakes are just because I've been around them for so long, and then something like that happens. It's OK if someone is scared of snakes, i understand that, but when there is legitimate hatred from miseducation its the worst.

When I was teaching high school I had more than one kid tell me I was going to hell for keeping snakes.

Another time I had an older woman tell me the old myth about the boa stretching out next to its owner at night to see if it could it him/her. I just asked her if she thought snakes use the metric or SI system when performing calculations.

    People be trippin.

I had to go to the ER a few weeks ago with intense vertigo because it turned out I had labyrinthitis, which is an inflammation of the inner ear. My mom came up to my apartment to drag my dizzy, stumbling self into the car and called my grandmother from the ER to tell her I wasn't dying, just had a bad ear infection giving me the dizzies. My grandmother promptly replied, "Could she have gotten that from that SNAKE she has?!?!"

Yes, yes indeed, those evil snakes just spreading those ear infections. Can't trust them for a second!
