I've seen newbie nymphs get eaten when they just come out of the ootheca (I think that's what it's called don't quote me on that one) they're white and if moisture is down the adults will eat them for the moisture. If the baby was black meaning the Exo has hardened it probably was just holding on for dear life and just happened to be near the adults mouth. Smaller roaches will cling on to adults sometimes. Theyll also get stuck on them from moisture etc. Do I think mothers have mothering instinct after the little ones are out of the ootheca (there's that darn word again) no. But I do have a pretty cool pic of one of my lobster females.
