Well since PETA opposes owning animals, it shouldn't surprise the public to find out they kill almost all the pets it takes in "to find new forever homes for". After all, better dead than owned, right?

Check out petakillsanimals site too. They literally went places, told the people they would definitely find a new home for various pets, took the pets out to their van, killed them right there in the vehicle in the parking lot, then dumped the dead bodies into a dumpster behind a store.

They got charged with littering I think, not for much else, if I remember correctly. The media somehow didn't cover it... hmmm, I've been saying the media is in HSUS/PETA's pockets.
