Keeping Night Temps
Hey I'm wondering about if I could turn off the uth and turn on my heat light at night. Basking temp won't be as high but ambient temp will be good. If I have them both on the uth will get too hot. What should I do? Is it better to offer a good warm hide at all times or a good overall ambient temp.

is your UTH on a thermostat? if so does it have a night drop feature?
how much will the basking temp drop?

If you have your UTH on a thermostat it shouldn't get to hot.

Re: Keeping Night Temps
personally I don't let the temps drop at night. I just don't see the point really. But i know lots of people do because it replicated the natural swing of temps but from what i understand there is no real advantage or disadvantage between the 2 ideas as long as your friend has the option to choose when he/she wants more or less heat.

I am using a repti temp rheostat at the moment. I just can't afford 300 bucks yet for the thermostat. I keep my basking temp 90-93. At night my house gets cold so I usually have the tank around 75 if I don't use the light. So I have had to set the light on intervals to keep the ambient temp up. If left on all night I'm certain the lowest I can get the basking temp will be 100... And as I said off all night the ambient around 75 maybe lower.
So if I turn off the uth and on the light it'll be more around 83-85.

This could easily be avoided if I could get a thermostat for under 150$

I keep my temps the same 24/7 year round, and I've never paid $300 for a thermostat.

Get a hydrofrm thermostat for $30
http://www.amazon.com/Hydrofarm-MTPR..._bxgy_ol_img_b
Or a better thermostat for $139 A herpstat 1

if that isn't an option, I would just use the heat lamp at night... though it is less than ideal.

Reptile Basics Inc. sells very good thermostats for less than $120 all day long and twice on Sunday. Where are you shopping for T-Stats?

Re: Keeping Night Temps
I went to Big Apple Pet Supply and got a thermostat for about $100. Had it for about a year and its worked perfectly. No hitches so far.
