Ok here is a tip. If your basement has glass block windows pick a window close to where your rodents are kept. Remove one glass block pane and replace it with a dryer vent.

You can get the vent from home depot or wherever glass block is sold. You can vent a bathroom exhaust fan thru this just as you do your clothes dryer. You can use the same type if vent hose used for dryers.

Re: need help with rat smell... ventilation?

For your babies you can feed rat pups or pinks and get rid of the mice altogether. When I fed mice the entire house smelled like mouse poop. Really nasty little critters

Are you restricted to the smaller fans because of the narrow hose? How do you connect the fan to the hose? A sealed box comes to mind but I'm not sure about the restricted air flow of the hose?

    Has anyone tried this setup?

I start all my baby balls out on rat pinks. I prefer for none of my balls to eat any mice ever, and to date, no problems.

I have a window in my rat room, so I can use a fan in the window, wouldn't know how to install the vent fans, but I'm sure it'll do the job, since my little window fan eliminates odor within 10 minutes of turning it on.... even on cleaning day. I don't have much odor until it gets close to a week, unless there's a lot of babies in a bin making a mess.

After using aspen and pine beddings, I don't notice much difference in odor though.

Honestly. i use cat litter (the newspaper kind that is cheap) and aspen. i clean it once a week or even once every 2 weeks and the smell is not bothersome at all.

I rigged this thing up in my garage right before winter and it works great.

Definitely ditch the mice and feed the babies on rat pinks/fuzzies. Mice are awful.

Just wanted to throw it out there that I think my ASFs stink worse than my rats, mice, spiny mice, pygmy mice, deer mice, and house mouse. . .

You're crazy. If I'm anywhere close to the rat rack I can easily smell the 9 rats over the hundreds of ASFs.
