New BP owner
I am new to the snake world. been a Bp owner for almost 2 weeks now. a few questions...
1. Humidity: Cant keep above 40%. Pet store says 40 is fine not to worry, other people tell me it needs 60-70%.
2. Hide: I have 2 hides, a rock hide on the warm side, log hide on cooler side. He will NOT go under the log hide on the cool side, but NEVER comes out of the rock hide on the warm side unless i take him out and put him on other side, but then goes right back to the hide.
3. Feeding while shedding? Some say no some say yes, today is normal feeding day, but i see his eyes are cloudy blue. this is first shed since ive got him so i dont know if i shoudl feed or not?

1. Humidity needs to be closer to 60% not 40% otherwise hes gunna have a bad shed. Theres multiple ways to raise the humidity so thats not a big deal.
2. He doesnt wanna use the log hide because he doesnt feel secure in it. You want 2 identical hides.
3. You can certainly try and feed him. 2 of mine eat in shed but 1 doesnt. I would say that after trying once you'll pretty much know what your snake prefers one way or another. From then on if hes in shed either do or dont offer him food.

Re: New BP owner
Humidity should be 40-60, 70 when in shed. What is your substrate? How big is you water dish? A larger water dish over/under your heat source will help. You can also put damp spaghum moss in his hide to help with humidity during shed. So will Eco earth substrate. Your hides should be identical. Your snake may not like the log, and may not properly thermo regulate if he doesn't like that hide. Bps need to feel very secure and like hides that provide them that feeling. If he has a favorite hide because they are different, he may not go to the other one. Also what are the temp and how are they controlled? Could be he is cold over there. Lastly, if your bp is "blue" I would wait until after shed to feed him. It won't hurt him to wait. Most won't eat when blue. The fluid clouds their eyes, and they can't see as well. Good luck with your new bp, and welcome!

Humidity needs to be between 40% and 60% normally. But during shed humidity needs to be between 60% and 80%.
Temperatures need to be: 78-82 on the cool side and 88-92 on he hot side 24/7 (do not drop the temperatures at night) Under tank heaters (heat mats) need to be regulated by a thermostat and if you are using a heat bulb an infrared bulb is best (so it can be left on 24/7 without disturbing the snake)

My ball python is often on the warm side, I only use 1 hide. I also offer food to my ball python while in shed, if he eats, much better and if he refused then no problem... I hope this helps.

Ok. i put a damp moist towl over half the tank, humidity has now reached 65%.
as far as feeding, i offered and he took.
teh temps in my tank are consistently 75-80 on cool side, 90-95 warm side.
As far as hides, i will get another rock hide and see if he will start using that as well.

Re: New BP owner
I am sure he will start to thermoregulate and switch hides once you get 2 identical hides as for your humidity I cover about 2/3 of my tanks with Plexiglass or make a custom plexi top that just fits into the slider, if you have one, and drill several holes for ventilation hope this helps
