I was watching infested last night and one of them was a house that this couple had bought that the crawl space was where garter snakes hibernated.

First I thought "awesome!" but then they said that their water taste like the musk from the garter snakes.... Not so cool anymore =( and then they said that snake droppings can carry tapeworms. Really not cool!

Then I passed out so I don't know how it ended but I woke up trying to figure out how a tapeworm would fit in a tiny little garter snake lol

To my knowledge tapeworms don't infest reptiles but their eggs can pass through them via their prey items.

I saw that episode last year and IIRC the foundation was cracked as well as the pipes running through it and that's how the snake juices were getting in the water. The only way to get rid of them was the tear down the house and rebuild.

reptiles can get tapeworm which is carried by fleas. Snake eats a rat/mouse with flea they have chance of getting it.

In fact.. We have a member here who has a ball python that was very recently being treated for tapeworms. There is a thread where the member posted a picture of the snakes poo and you could clearly see a rather long tapeworm in it.

That's terrible that snakes really can get tapeworms... Such a large parasite for such small animals =/

There are many different species of tapeworms, and they aren't all of equal size, but they can all grow tremendously long.

That house might be for sale, by the way. I think they have priced it too high, all things considered...the real issue is the compromised water supply. I personally think THAT issue could probably be addressed by a plumber. Are the snakes getting into the well? Into the pipes? That should be able to be fixed.

No cure for the fact that the house will reek like snake musk for a large part of the year. I would think, however, that deliberately building a more suitable hibernaculum, and then going through and sealing the foundation very thoroughly (along with protecting the water supply), ought to encourage the snakes to move a few yards next door, and allow you to do a clean up and make it livable. Just a thought. That's a lot of snake poo to have underfoot, though.

Yeah I originally heard about it months ago in an email. I told my fiancé we should go buy it =P

She wasn't amused haha! She loves our ball pythons but will not touch the gopher snake. She's not a fan of the colubrids, something to do with their heads lol she likes the snakes with the really defined heads.
