Ball Python Registry?

Some time you cant go by a reputation, I can think of a few that lost it all over the years by selling hets that were not. The one that comes to mind was vary big back in the day. If something like this would work ide be for it. But i see no way to make it work 100% But it would be nice to buy a het with out thinking is it?

Does the lineage database in iHerp count?

The lineage database is a system that allows all animals to be interrelated to one another. When enabling an animal for the lineage database, this animal, and it's parents, need to be set for public view, and once added, cannot be removed (this would break the lineage tree). The same way other registries do. It isn't exactly difficult to determine fraud when there is a paper trail!
No one selling fake hets is going to register them, and wind up with police knocking on their door when someone finds out about it.

Registration means that person's identity is confirmed, and that animal's identity is confirmed, and it's all kept in a central database. That is more than enough to prosecute for fraud if someone registers a normal as a het. What's more, that individual would be barred from registering animals in the future, and all of the animals that they have registered would likely be removed from the registry.

What happens when an animal is registered as a het, but due to something beyond your control, whether it's an animal you bought as a het or sperm retention from the previous year turns out to not be a het? There's just too many variables with ball pythons, not to mention the fact that there's just too many breeders for it to be all encompassing. You've got the little guys doing it for a hobby that aren't going to want to pay a fee to register every animal they produce, and then you've got the big guys producing 1000+ offspring every year that I think it's safe to say won't want to register every animal regardless of the cost. If something like this DOES happen, I think it'll be a pretty small niche of breeders that would actually use it...

I use the cornsnake registry actually.

The breeder doesn't pay to register babies, the person buying the baby does. The breeder just registers his breeders. It lets you see both ancestors of your snake, and progeny.

Here is a link to one of my snakes, you can see three generations of her ancestors, plus a couple of her kids. It's a pretty cool thing.

The American Corn Snake Registry is now offering an annual fee of $60 to register as many corn snakes as a breeder wants to within a calendar year, so it's a pretty good deal if you have a lot of them to register. You can also still register them individually if you don't have too many. And it's still totally free to be added to their list as a breeder, even if you don't choose to register individual animals.

I have all of my corns registered, but I know not every breeder makes the effort to register all of their animals. It is quite a bit of work to take all their pictures and input their genetic details. Even without detailed registrations from each and every breeder, the ACR still offers a nice list of over 800 corn snake breeders around the world, their business names, locations and links to their websites. I would love to see something similar come together for ball pythons.

Unless you chip the animal, the registry is only as good as the person typing in the information. I would rather trust the hand full of breeders I know personally, and my own judgment.

The other thing about a registry is it's a great place to find out who has what. When that knock comes on your door and the nice guys in the pretty uniforms say they're there to take away your animals, you may not be so happy that you were the one who told them what you had and where you lived.
