I probably shouldn't admit this, but I don't have a hygrometer yet, so I was judging the humidity by feel and trying to follow the recommendations on this site. I covered part of the screened top and had been misting 2-3x a day leaving some of the sides wet to evaporate. I made him a humid hide with some moss I kept moist, but whenever I checked he was in the hide on the warm end, so I'd just mist the underside of the hide gently before replacing it. Well, it seemed to feel humid and warm inside the tank, without the aspen being damp, so I'm glad it went ok! I need to get that temp/humidity gauge from Walmart which everyone seems to like.

(I live in FL and it's usually pretty humid already, so that may have helped out as well.)
