Picking Het Pieds out of a clutch
I was watching a NERD video on youtube and he was saying that he can pick het pieds out of clutches that multiple genes in them. He didn't elaborate on what too look for. When breeding to a normal, I guess you can look for the tracks (kinda hit or miss with that one) but what if you had say a bumblebee bred to a 100% het pied. Could you see a difference in the babies that were hets? Just throwing this out there for future breeding projects. Thanks.

While it is possible, it isn't a guarantee and takes a lot of experience to do
Personally I don't put much merit into it, but I have seen a few who got it right most of the time.

Re: Picking Het Pieds out of a clutch
But what should I be looking for in terms of markers/indicators?

i saw that too, but i dont think theres any way of telling how to pick them out. you have to remember that kevin has hatched out thousands and thousands of snakes, so im sure he has developed some kind of "eye" for certain things like that, but really i doubt he could even explain what hes looking at in a way that someone could go home and pick out all their het pieds after just listening to him or even seeing some examples
your best bet woulp probably be to give yourself years of experience and see what little clues you can pick up here and there, and you never know, maybe someday you will be able to tell your hets from non hets on a somewhat regular basis just by looking. but even then, it still has to be proven through breeding for me to believe that a snake is a het

Re: Picking Het Pieds out of a clutch
So - this snake is in my collection. Yes - this exact animal.
http://www.worldofballpythons.com/mo...chi-pinstripe/
I acquired him October 2010 when I was visiting Kara at NERD. He's also poss het pied. He was one of Kevin's hold backs, but since we are friends, he let him go to me.
Kevin believes that he actually IS het pied, and this year he is breeding to a visual pied and two proven het pied females. Kara told me, if Kevin believes him to be het pied, the chances are high that he will prove out.
On this male, on his belly, he has little dots on each side of the belly that go up the length of his belly. Kevin showed me a sibling that didn't have those same marks and told me that's what he looked for in THIS cross to determine if he was indeed het.
We'll find out this season if the ball gods smile down on us.

I see this question brought up every couple of months. For all the naysayers, YES you can pick out the hets. Again, it IS NOT just the belly tracks. Pete Kahl, the largest breeder and first to produce pieds, discovered it and kept all of his possible het females in his early days of pieds. He sold all of the 100% hets. Hatch any number of pieds and hets and you will notice.
Peace out!

Re: Picking Het Pieds out of a clutch
I have two 100% het pied females from Deborah (stewartreptiles.com), and there is no question that they can't be normals (in addition to the fact that they came from a pied pairing). Belly tracks, extra vibrant coloring, and funky patterning definitely make these two stand out from any "normal" I've seen.
