    Probe Placement Thermostat/Thermometer

I'm wondering if it is OK to place the probe of my thermometer inside the tank, under the hide where the UTH is located. I don't know if it is safe to have a little wire running down the side of the terarrium (tank) I have my BP in, or if I should just put the probe in occasionally to check the temp using the thermometer. Currently I have the probe for the thermostat under the tank on the UTH (not between the tank and UTH). Is this alright???

You can and should put the thermometer inside the enclosure, and the thermostat probe is correct

Thermostat probe against the uth under the tank, thermometer probe inside of the tank placed directly over the hot spot.

Why is this, wouldn't it make more sense to have the thermostat probe inside the tank, so it's actually regulating the temperature in the hides, not under the tank?

it is safer this way as the snake cannot move the probe off of the hot spot. by regulating the temperature of the heat tape and not the cage temperature it requires a little more checking but it should keep you safer from a overheating issue.

The ideal set up is to have a proportional thermostat like the herpstat connected to the heat tape with the probe inside the cage over the hot spot. Then plug the herpstat into a non-proportional thermostat like a ranco. The Ranco's probe is attached to the heat tape and acts as a backup. you set the herpstt to your desired temperature, and the rancho to the hottest you want the heat tape to get to. If the max temperature is breached the rancho will cut power to he herpstat until the heat tape has cooled down.

    Re: Probe Placement Thermostat/Thermometer

X2 I have had snakes dump water and move mt thermometer probes all over thier tanks so the T-Stat probe just needs to be on the heatsource to regulate it and temp inside can be adjusted and monitered with a thermometer
