Do you mean a bio-active system or just some plants? bio active substrate uses 'good' bacteria to keep the system clean. Uranates are usually stirred in but solids picked up. It isn't easy to set up but once done it is the lowest maintenance of all systems. The guys I know whom have this type only change substrate partially and at that only once ever 1-2 years. they mostly just trim plants.
