Ok. If you set up your tub the way I said or follow the step by step instructions from the link I posted and you will be keeping you tub inside the house you should have a healthy snake

I don't think he has the option of keeping he snake inside. Ambient temps tend to worry me in that situation.

If he can't then he either needs to get a space heater to heat the garage or not get another snake.

He is from so cal so it doesn't really get cold that close to the desert. That's about the only positive but I agree with you. If you can't take care of an animal properly then don't own it.

It does get cold in socal. It's 55 degrees in LA right now.
But yes, I agree that unless the animal will receive proper care, the OP should wait on getting a snake.

But it sounds like he's making an effort to fix his husbandry and get his animal(s) into the house.

You get a tub (if you aren't getting a rack then it also needs a good tight fitting lid)

Use a soldering iron, drill, or anything else that can poke holes in the tub. These holes let air in and help to regulate humidity.

You will need a UTH that covers approxametly 1/3 of the bottom of the tub. This will create the hot side. The UTH must be regulated by a thermostat. If money is tight you can get a hydrofarm thermostat for $30 but there are far better thermostats like the Herpstat.

The thermostat probe needs to be attached to the UTH or inside the tub. Regardless it needs to be secured so it can't move. I use hot glue for this. Just don't put any on the probe itself. Also do not use aluminum tape as it can mess with the probes readings.

Next you put your substrate in the tub, I would sugest newspaper or something similar.

You will need 2 hides. 1 that goes over the UTH and the other goes on the cool side.

You place a water bowel in the middle.

You should also have a thermometer/hydrometer in the tub. You can get this one at Wall*Mart for $12:

For more information check out this post, it is a step by step with pictures:

    http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showt...Basics...*DUW*

Just a quick note I really don't recomend using a tub if you will still be keeping a snake in your garage. I really don't think any set up will work but UTH's don't really effect air temperature so if it gets cold you will have problems.
I have an UTH already that i never used but wouldn't that melt the tub or cause other heating problems. When I Do get another snake he will be live in the house in a tub.

That is why you have to use a thermostat. It will keep the UTH from overheating.

I can get the snake inside the house, I just need to make sure that the house for the snake is 100% secure. My dad has a big fear of the snake getting loose inside the house.

Well you don't have the best track record lol but you should try and get your setup and show him how you will securely keep your snake in its tub. Use straps if you have to but inside is the best thing for your bp.

I agree you definitely need a thermostat. If money is an issue Amazon.com sells the Hydrofarm for under $30, no excuse. A UTH can burn the snake and/or melt the tub without being regulated. I use binder clips to secure my tubs, others use luggage straps which work well also.
