Axanthics and Hets
Has anyone heard of het axanthics being black/silver as hatchlings, but then quickly (within 3-5 months) gaining their color?
I have 3 that were sold as axanthics that had absolutely no color as hatchlings. They now look completely like normals.
The seller is returning my $ and I'm sending them back... I just want to know if it's a sign that they're het for axanthic, and not just normals. Or is this just a fluke? There were siblings in the same clutch that were normals from the beginning.
I don't have any pics of them as hatchlings, but they were absolutely black/silver/white -- no color whatsoever.
Just curious if someone has had Het axanthics come out looking just like an axanthic, but then getting color within a few months. Is it a regular thing to have happen?
thanks guys.

I have seen a lot of Axanthics that brown out over time, but 3-5 months seems quick. Never heard of het doing that, but I am not super well versed on the morph.

I have not, though it is not unusual for some lines of Axanthics to fade out and look normal.

Het red axanthic and red axanthics start off über dark then brown out. It does seem odd that it took so little time.

There's a line of Albino that produces babies that look Ax. when they hatch...The Albinos even look close to Snows....They aren't. Axs. though and color up after a few sheds.
On a side note it's not a good move to get unknown Ax. lines since they aren't all compatible.

they were sold to me as VPI axanthics. But further investigation showed that the original breeder had no idea what they were.
Here's the story... The breeder bought some poss. het clowns. When he bred them together, he produced no clowns. Instead, it produced 3 black/silver babies, along with a few normals (not sure how many).
The breeder questioned the person he got the possible hets from and was told that they must have been mis-labeled or something. Either the breeder, or the person he acquired them from, decided to sell them as VPI axanthics.
Another guy ended up trading a female mojave het ghost for the 3 "vpi axanthics". He then put them for sale, and I bought them. I'm finally resolving this with him over the next week. He dodged every call and text I sent him. I thought I had been screwed, but then I met a friend of his--someone who has one of his females. Using that as leverage, this friend has gotten me in contact, and I'm finally getting satisfaction.

@coldbloodaddict, Do you think these might more likely be het albinos?

very strange story lol! I haven't heard of them changing that quickly.. Its usually around the 500 gram mark that they start to look normal if they are TSK. VPI tends to hold colour longer than that..
This is a case for the twilight zone.

Re: Axanthics and Hets
I think how big they were when they changed would be a good question. With good genetics and great feeding you could have had them 500 grams in a few months.
Forget the name of that really quick change axanthic line associated with some albino projects. Last I read it had been determined to be a 2nd gene and not really a line of albino as some had thought. It's just that it shows up better in the snow looking albino hatchlings but can also be seen in axanthic looking non albino siblings. But it seems to change very very quickly, like in a shed or two. Interestingly the double homozygous albino + whatever this is called babies that start out snow looking grow into really nice looking adult albinos. I can't seem to find the old thread on this but think they are the albinos that turn out orange on yellow with no white which is a bit ironic for something that started out axanthic looking.
At any rate, whatever that axanthic gene is called it changes so fast it doesn’t seem like it could be what you have here. Perhaps this is a new line altogether.
