The new one is doing GREAT! He ate a baby rat yesterday like a pro, and so far has kept it down.
The pictures I have right now aren't that great but I guess I can post them (;





Hopefully after it cools down for a few more days we can get it out and take some better pictures.

That's a really good idea. The website I got mine from is a piece of crap and seems to not care about the animals that they have. The fact that the guy who runs it lives in New York and then the warehouse where all of the reptiles and other critters are kept is in Florida tells me that he might not even know that much about what he has to sell.
I mean the guy couldn't even tell me the last time my new little one ate.

Handwarmers are not acceptable to ship animals. When activated in such a small space, they get much to hot and use up all the available oxygen to get hot. So if it doesn't cook the animal, it suffocates them. There are heat packs designed for shipping animals, and they aren't that expensive. You talk about your roommate breaking the handwarmer ? Most of them activate upon being exposed to air, not by manipulation. Any chance of a picture of the handwarmer ?

Please make sure you contact this breeder and ask them to ship your replacement animal with the proper 40 hour heat packs that are designed for animals. If not, you will likely end up with another dead snake..

Hand warmers will cook a baby snake because they get entirely TOO hot TOO fast. Then they cool down right away and if the snake is still alive it will freeze.

Another problem you have to think about in this weather is cold shock syndrome. If the snake survives being shipped with hand warmers, the extreme cold for an extended period of time can cause CSS. It can cause neurological damage that the snake may never fully recover from. You could end up with a snake that has a spider-ball type wobble for the rest of it's life.

So please be sure the breeder has the proper heat packs. If they do not, be sure to tell them you are willing to wait until they get them. They cost less than $1.00 each and take only a couple days to get there if they order some online. They should already have some if they are shipping snakes. SYR/PE has them.

We got the new one already but when it arrived it was extremely cold. It seems to be doing fine now but what would be some signs that I need to keep an eye out for?

Just the obvious problems. Anything out of the ordinary. Signs of RI of course. Making unusual noises, raspy, whistling, clicking, etc. Any excess mucus. Rubbing the head/nose on the enclosure or objects in it. Star gazing. Holding the head up for extended periods.

Signs of CSS are neurological signs. Inability to strike prey efficiently. Wobbling, twisting, slow to right itself if turned upside down, etc. Of course these are things any snake will do if it's still too cold. There is only really a problem if these things are happening long after the snake is situated. Like days after.

If it's doing fine and showing no unusual symptoms when you observe or handle it then I wouldn't worry. I was just concerned with the way this person is shipping snakes in cold weather. CSS is rare but it does happen. We had a member on here last year with a ball showing signs of it for quite some time,and there was a YouTube video of a Retic shipped in a similar situation that was acting very strangely as well.

I had a burm delivered from a well known breeder with a heat pack in the box that was smelling when I opened it. This breeder said he has been shipping for 14 years and never had one arrive dead. He sent me another one and it was also DOA. He gave me my money back so i wasn't upset at him (jus feel bad for those snakes). I was thinking maybe it was the Fed Ex in my area. A few months later I had a blood python shipped to me from an out of state pet shop. It arrived with only news paper in the box and was alive and attentive. Makes you wonder about those warmers.
