    Gaming Exploitations

Do you find anything wrong with exploiting in game mechanics?

For example, in Skyrim, there's a guy in Riverwood that will be my companion. As a companion, I can freely give to and take items from him. He also happens to be an Archery Trainer. So I pay him for them training and then I open trade with him and take it back. I rinse and repeat. I basically get free training.

In old school days, there was a turtle (koopa troopa I think they were called) on a certain stair case that if you time your jumps right, you could max out your 1-UP's and not have worry about dying amd running out of lives before you beat the game.

I personally have no problem with these things but it seems some people do. They think it makes the games to easy. I disagree. I have no problem taking advantage of in-game mechanics for my personal benefit. It's not like I have hacked the game. Most PC games have built-in god modes and cheat codes anyway. So it's not like they discourage it.

So what do you guys think?

Personally I'm okay with taking advantage of in game mechanics if you're playing alone. When playing single player it's your game to be played how you want to play it. It's up to you what you do and how you play. If the game is still fun for you even with maxed out 1-UP's then yes do that but if it makes it too easy and you're not having fun anymore then you're losing site of what games are supposed to be. That koopa troopa is still there in the new Mario for the 3DS too and it doesn't hurt to have those extra lives since the 3D mechanics can be a bit confusing at times. What I don't like though is playing online with people that are blatantly cheating. NFS: Hot Pursuit comes to mind...People would disappear underground and then reappear randomly. Sometimes driving the entire course underground. This allowed them to avoid any obstacles or attacks from other players - avoiding the entire point of the game. This bothers me (and I see it as different) because you're not just playing by yourself but you're now making MY experience lame because I can't even race you. You're taking away from what the game is supposed to be and you're not using any skill to beat me...you're cheating.

I just woke up so if this doesn't make sense I'll clarify in a minute. lol

I agree 100% with babyknees - cheats used to run rampant in Counter-Strike, for example, and it made playing the game miserable for quite a long time. Everything from replacing the models with high-visibility ones to teleporting into the opposition's base at the start of a round. It all sucked. If you're only modifying your own experience, fine, but don't mess with mine. Lag and server-side problems are enough to deal with without cheaters/hackers screwing around with things too...

In the scenario you gave, I think it is completely fine. As long as what you do doesn't effect others, which in your case it doesn't. Now if for example, in COD MW3 you had lives, and there was a cheta for more lives and we were playing online, I would see how it is unfair. But if it doesn't effect anyone, then who cares. Those who complain are losers who thin kthey are the video game Gods and need to find something better to do with their lives.

Honestly, I'm perfectly fine with it all. IMO if you're clever enough to figure out that you can do it, then you merit the benefit.

No, I do not find anything wrong with it, but I also think that it can make a game less fun. I have read that you can also put in codes in Skyrim to give yourself unlimited life. In my opinion, that would ruin the game. Part of the fun is the challenge.

Non-PC related, what do you all think about exploiting card games, for example card counting in blackjack?

Card counting is pretty darn tough, so my opinion on it is the same. If you're smart enough to count cards and get away with it, then you kind of earned it, whether it's conventionally "fair" or not.

I always feel a bit bad when I exploit bugs in the game, but if it's not a bug and it's just a part of the game that happens to work well for me, I generally have no problem using it. Hidden developer chests, stealing back money after purchases (like with Heralds in Assassin's Creed) and other things that are in the game and just needed to be discovered, I will use and then I laugh thinking about how much easier and faster it is than having to earn it all on my own.

"fun" is different for everyone. some people have fun having an unfair advantage over the game.. and some people prefer the challenge of it all. thats why people will cheat in online games lol. once they can become invincible, they have fun making everyone mad...

a long time ago, i used cheat codes (not bugs) to become invincible in a single player campaign mode of a game, and it was fun just running through and looking at all the AI try to kill me lol. I got through the story pretty quickly..

edit: LOL.. didn't really respond to the Q.. as far as using bugs in game to take a shortcut, i personally find it boring. i know someone who will brag about how good hes doing in a game, and how he has no trouble completing the most difficult parts... in an MP game, he tells everyone about how high his rank is and how he's really good.. he told me that he will use bugs or cheats in single player.. and he mentioned to another person that he paid for his high level mp account.... THATS where it bothers me lol. go ahead and use those things, but be humble about it, and don't brag about how you succeeded faster than most people...
