As long as there is no chance the branch could fall on him, it should be fine. He'll probably like climbing on it anyway
Are you only using a heat lamp? I can't tell from the picture. Most people use under tank heat, either from UTH's or heat tape.

Great article, thanks for sharing! I use a UTH on the hot side and a heat lamb on the cold side. If I don't use the heat lamb, the ambient temp is around 72.
