Even large ball pythons can cram themselves into surprisingly small spaces. They feel most secure that way, its what they prefer. As long as the whole snake fits in the hide snuggly and it is not ACTUALLY stuck, then you are good. Plastic hides are great, easy to clean, just make sure there are no sharp edges where the hole was cut. With most softer plastics, you can melt down a sharp edge with just a regular old lighter.(wait til it cools again before putting it in with your snake
